Given the eternal Afro/Latin bias of Local and Western ears, Asian music, particularly Philippine music seems to be the 'final frontier' of world music. Exceptional East/West fusionist SYALAM is the latest band to challenge this state of affairs. What started off as a side project band for most of its members in 2006, led them to a musical journey where everything was made possible through the help of some good friends in the industry, SYALAM was able to self produce and release their debut album “TAYO†under Mah Music Records in June 13, 2008.
TAYO is a Malay influenced album that showcases the band’s pride and distinctive approach in creating their very own type of music. In this album, SYALAM provides a broad range of musicality, ranging from reggae to blues, folk dance to dub, and jazz to tribal ethnic. TAYO, which consists of 10 original tracks, summons the beauty and the struggle of modern Filipino culture, invokes their listeners to spread “the word†and be a part of a positive cultural, environmental and social movement/transformation.

THE LATE ISABEL @ the 5th Backdoor Ventures ARTS & MUSIC FESTIVAL
In the dreams of those she haunts, Isabel is always leaving. She has been sighted barefoot and pale, by various sleepers, at the doorstep of a familiar downtown cinema, the gates of a university building at closing time, departing a smoky club and exiting a convenience store at twilight. She vanishes when she steps to the curb, just as the high beams of an approaching car freeze her. Those who do wake, often wake in sweat.
“I was playing with a visual concept, a series of posters showing this half-familiar woman always in transit,†says Allan Hernandez, explaining the basis of the name and the band’s wraith-like, female persona.
The music of THE LATE ISABEL is the origin, product and nature of this haunting rolled into a single koan. It is music that makes of funerals and wakes a celebration -- a time to sing and a time to dance as tears run down your face. The character of Isabel, the vignettes and scenes of her life (and probably her demise) live on in the band’s songs. Aural creations that crest and break like a wave of grief to wash over both viscera and brain with the force of psychedelia, ambient, shoegazer, dark wave and goth.
The band started in 1998 as MADELINE USHER then renamed itself OLD WORLD CHARM in 1999, shedding and gaining a few members along the way. Earlier still it was a death metal outfit named THANATOPSY, and so on to THE LATE ISABEL DELGADO, now remembered even more easily -- and fondly -- without her surname. The band is currently composed of WAWI NAVARROZA (vocals), ALLAN HERNADEZ (guitars), JP AGCAOILI (drums), and ROVAL BACALE (bass), all veterans of the Manila goth-punk scene.
Coming of age in the post-punk era, the quartet grew up with a love for bands that eschewed the freewheeling go-go of ‘80s mainstream music. With this came the intuitive understanding that music had to function on all to achieve a holistic effect.
“Art is not an isolated experience. It is deeply personal and deeply communal. I believe that the visual aspect of the band needs to be included in the package,†relates JP Agcaoili.
“If I could put music, painting, poetry, literature all in one package, then I would love to do that,†agrees Wawi Navarroza.
Their debut album, DOLL’S HEAD, is a collection of eight exceptional tracks composed of equal parts lament, anguish, awe and snapshots of everyday tragedies. From the sinuous and seductive chant of the title track, the hungry eloquence of “Fingers Around the Wineglass,†the demented agitation of “Follow (The Mad March),†to the exploration of the urban abyss that is “Midnight City,†the record is indeed the culmination of two years’ labor in the subculture fringe.
Meanwhile, their live performance has been praised by local media as a “tour through the dark corners of . . .dreams,†adding that, “to watch The Late Isabel live is to be intrigued. . .and entranced.â€
DOLL’S HEAD crystallizes the quartet’s skill for leading the listener to precision rapture via a swirling palette of textures and sonic landscapes that bring to fore the monsters, beautiful or otherwise, lurking in the depths. Proof that being haunted can be a ravishing, rhapsodic experience.

Yes. Mostly around Metro Manila's rock music bars and clubs (Mayric's, Freedom Bar, Millennia, etc), but sometimes also in venues outside of the Philippine metropolitan capital. Also in live rock concerts and events periodically held in Manila.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
It's a whole new medium for music, the same yet utterly different. It will change the way music is made, from concept to marketing, probably in much the same way, if not more so, than the way music videos have changed pop music culture.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I guess the members of The Late Isabel are not very conscious of that as an issue. We want to make our music, and probably get it out into the ether as well, with a life of its own. Doing it indie or with a major label is not something we consciously ponder on.
Your influences?
The band has always been partial to Siouxsie and the Banshees, as well as other late-seventies and eighties acts like The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Joy Division, etc. Digging deeper, we looked to artists who in turn influenced these acts, and so now for covers we do our own twists on songs by David Bowie, Velvet Underground, The Doors, or even off-track renditions of unexpected songs like "My Favourite Things" (from Sound of Music) or "Diamonds are Forever" (from James Bond). The band members all have eclectic tastes and we try to feed that musical knowledge into a sound that we like to think is distinctly The Late Isabel - glassy guitars, insistent basslines, primitive beats... It may be worth to note that there is a conscious absence of keyboards, which we like to take as a challenge and distinct feature in our coming up with a heavy atmosphere and ambience in our sound coming out from just percussions, guitars, bass and vocals.

THE CHONGKEYS A band with mix genre, through our music of rock alternative, reggae with a little bit of ,funk, rap, dub and few surprises that are recepies for a whole lot of fun into a good sound trip. THE CHONGKEYS was formed in 2003 and today still consist of the four members, namely BENJIE P. ESTANISLAO (voice), JOHAN S. LUGTU (guitar/voice) PEPITO TRINIDAD (bass) and MARK MARQUEZ (drums). We started in a simple jamming session place in Marikina called “Groove Shop†(an indie skate store). Benjie who was one of the owners of Groove Shop; Johan was a vocalist of a hardcore CAKEWALK band, Pepito from BEEWINGS band and Mark a former drummer of CHERRY CORNFLAKES who replaced the former drummer Judas of ILL ADVICE. After several jamming sessions and being together we decided to make more songs and get serious about it. Few months after, we had EP launched, 10 tracks of our original songs at the rock and roll Purple Haze Bar. THE CHONGKEYS had the honor of playing in many venues in metro manila (Bars: Mayrics, Xymaca, Club Dreeds, Purple Haze Bar, Freedom Bar, Dayo Bar, Kolumn Bar, Magnet Bar, Ride and Roll Diners, 9Mile bar, 70’s Bistro, One Love Bar, 6 Underground, Wills Attic and more). Also played in some parties like birthday’s, company’s christmas parties and our out of town gigs with some of the top performers in the Philippine Music Industry. We also played in most of the big events within Metro Manila like Pulp Summer Slam, Fete de la Musique Malate, Rakista 7, 9 & 10, Skateboard Demo and Competition, Tabak, Urge Magazine Tour, UP Fair, Dutdutan Festival 2008, Give A Damn for Rizal 2008, The First Clark Rock Festival, Arts Music Festival (I,II,III and IV) and several guesting and judging for Battle of the Bands. Had the opportunities to play on TV Sows like Breakfast Show with Studio23 and Jojo A of QTV Channel and Live Radio Interviews with NU107 FM, Jam88.3 live session and YesFM Boracay. We believed, supported, promoted and respected different genre. Because of our respect and faith in music we had given a chance to be managed by Ann Angala-Shy (a former band manager of Eraserheads and POT). During her guidance and supervision we

The name ALAMID has built its name and reputation in the entertainment
industry through the years.
Who doesn’t know their very ï¬ rst hit song, “Your Love†that is now the anthem
of millions of lovestruck Filipinos? This song was composed by vocalist Gary
Ignacio and guitarist Dexter Facelo in 1994 and still reverberates in radio,
karaoke and was even used in a Koreanovela. “Your Love†was the ï¬ rst Song
of the Year of the radio rock station NU 107 as well as becoming the most
requested song of 1994.
This was followed by other hit songs like the danceable “Sama-Sama†, “China Eyes†, “Just Wasn’t Brave Enough†,
the inspiratational song “Hesus†and the very naughty “Batibot.†Aside from their very powerful originals, Alamid
is equally capable of doing cover tunes like the Rey Valera’s “Malayo Pa ang Umaga†, “Iris†by the GooGoo Dolls,
new wave hits like “Gold†and “99 Red Ballons†and the heavy metal “Down With the Sickness†by Disturbed.
ALAMID was named after a nearly extinct wild mountain cat found only in the Mt. Province region here in the
country. But ALAMID did not vanish they went on a worldwide trek touring Hong Kong, Japan, South Africa, and
Alamid returns to the country fresh from their stint in the Middle
East. The band was a favorite of US servicemen where they had a
3-month long stint at a US Naval base in Bahrain.
They also recorded and released their latest album in Bahrain,
Listening Pleasure. It is a limited edition CD that re-created the band’s
original songs and revivals of some great hits in acoustic version.
That CD will soon be released in the country with a local label.
Alamid also had a successful show last October 9, 2009, dubbed as
RAKABAYAN Qatar 2009, which is an annual music festival in Doha,
Qatar. They performed together with Rico Blanco and Brownman
Revival for a 3,000-strong Filipino audience.
For the last quarter of 2009, the band introduces its newest single,
“Closer†. The song is a revival of an Immaculate original that is
done in a style that only Alamid can do where they hope to remind
the hearts of their fans about being in love, The followers of the
band have long looked for a follow-up to the band’s quintessential
song, “Your Love†which was their very ï¬ rst hit in 1994.
Alamid has also produced other hits as well like “China Eyes†,
“Sama-Sama†, their version of the inspirational song, “Hesusâ€
and the rockin’ and irreverent version of “Batibot†.
Alamid is composed Gary Ignacio on vocals and Dexter Facelo

band have long looked for a follow-up to the band’s quintessential
song, “Your Love†which was their very ï¬ rst hit in 1994.
Alamid has also produced other hits as well like “China Eyes†,
“Sama-Sama†, their version of the inspirational song, “Hesusâ€
and the rockin’ and irreverent version of “Batibot†.
Alamid is composed Gary Ignacio on vocals and Dexter Facelo
on guitar, as the two remaining original members. They are ably
joined by Gene Mitra on keyboards, Jun Pineda on bass and Jex
Herradura on drums.
